The SITES Instructional Tool Set (http://sites.unc.edu/tools)

A set of individual tools that can be selected piecemeal and incorporated into the organization of an instructor's course site. These tools are based on HTML, JavaScript and PERL scripts that are run from on a Web server. As such, they will run on most any Web serving system and can be set up fairly easily. They don't, however, come with administration features to allow editing and advanced management of the tools. There are two levels of access for these tools

Distribution packages for download

Free Comprehensive Packages

Speakeasy Studio & Cafe (http://morrison.wsu.edu/studio/)

This comprehensive package constructed around neighborhood and community metaphors and provides instructors with a preconfigured interface and tools for facilitating text sharing and interaction. The source code is freely available, although a specific server and some sophisticated administration may be required. The site does, however, graciously offer to host neighborhoods for educational institutions and instructors free of charge.

ETUDES (http://etudes.fhda.edu/www/IntroToEtudes/logframe.html)

Another package that provides a comprehensive set of tools including file sharing, conversation forums and quiz mechanisms. The interface is preconfigured but offers a reasonably straightforward navigation scheme. The package is freely available for download, but currently only offfered in a PowerMac version.

Commercial Comprehensive Packages

Web Course in a Box (http://www.madduck.com/)

A comprehensive tool that covers features such as site creation and class management. The package provides tools for scheduling, sharing links and files and facilitating interaction between students. Because the tool generates course pages, interfaces are standardized between courses.
