Compatibility
Issues

This project has been designed to maximize perl scripts and the latest Web browser technology in order to open up the text of The Country of the Pointed Firs to interaction with readers. There are some known problems and incompatibilities.

Problems with frames and the annotation function:

javascripts sometimes disable the Back button of browsers.
To return to previous material in these cases, use the navigation buttons in the menu frame and reenter the section you wish to explore.

A section of text can only be annotated one time.
To maximize the number of readers who can participate in the project, select the smallest possible phrase to use as an annotation link, leaving more options available for future readers.

The annotation script finds only the first occurance of an annotation phrase in every section.
To annotate a word that occurs later or multiple times in any section, select a more distinct phrase to serve as the annotation link.

The annotation script has trouble processing characters like !.
If annotating a section of the text that contains characters fails, select an alternate phrase to serve as the annotation link.

The annotation script will overwrite earlier annotations with new versions.
To edit your own annotations, use this function to replace older annotations with new ones. To comment on a passage that has already been annotated, use the response function provided in the original annotation, or select a neighboring phrase to serve as your annotation link.
Browser Compatability Issues:

Although most of the content is available to older and non-graphical browsers, to fully experience the text, a browser that supports frames and JavaScript is required.

We have not been able to test every browser, but there are some known bugs and incompatibilities. Here is a list of popular browsers and information about their compatibility with this project.
