"The Open Boat," by Stephen Crane was first published in Scribner's Magazine in May of 1894. It is based on the real-life events that followed the sinking of the ship the Commodore, which was smuggling weapons to Cuba. In the tale, Crane relates his experiences struggling to survive at sea after the ship goes down.
